Two Days National Symposium on Biotechnology and Drug discovery concludes at SMVDU

JAMMU: The Two-day National Symposium on Recent Trends in Biotechnology and Drug Discovery, RTBDD-17, successfully concluded at SMVDU on 31st March 2017. The symposium was organized by Dept. of Biotechnology, SMVDU and inaugurated by Jenab Sajjad Gani Lone; Hon'ble Minister for Science and Technology, J&K Govt while Padma Shri and Ex-Vice Chancellor, SMVDU Prof. RNK Bamezai was the Guest of Honour, Chief Patron of the Symspoisum Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Honourable Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Prof. V. Verma, Dean FoE & Head DoBT and Prof. V.K. Bhat, Dean, FoS & Registrar Patrons, RTBDD-17 and Convener, Dr. Narendra Kumarwelcomed the participants.
Prof.V.Verma, Dean, Faculty of Engineering highlighted the need for seeking the recent research in different aspects of Biotechnology from plants to computational biology to advancements in finding the causes of rare disorders by whole exome sequencing and NGS technologies.
Guest of Honour, Padama Shri, Prof R.N.K. Bamezai, highlighted the need of bringing research to common man. He delivered the keynote address on topic "Metabolic Tuners as Potential Drug Targets in Cancer- a Biotechnological Approach to Human Disease" and enlightened the participants.
Honourable Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, Prof. Sanjeev Jain, wished the success to the symposium and stressed the need of blending of Biotechnology with the ayurveda principles.
The symposium consisted of keynote address by Prof. RNK Bamezai on Potential drug targets in cancers.
There were 13 Invited Lectures by eminent scientists and Ramalinga Swami Fellows: Prof. KK Kapoor, Jammu University, Prof. Yashpal Sharma, Jammu University, Dr. Shilaja Singh, SCMM, JNU, New Delhi, Dr. Jitendra Thakur, NIPGR, New Delhi, Dr. Fayaz Malik, IIM, Jammu Dr. Neel Sarover Bhavesh, ICGEB, New Delhi, Dr. Deepak Salunke, PU, Dr. Shaida Andrabi, KU, Dr. Rajnikant Dixit, New Delhi, Dr. Surender Nimesh, CURAJ, Dr. Biswajit Gopal, Sikkim University.
The lectures were focussed on various aspects of biotechnology including lectures on Plant Biotechnology, human health, Microbial Sciences, Biophysical and Chemical Sciences and drug development. The symposium also included contributed talks by researchers from different universities which were followed by technical sessions for the oral and poster presentations.
The Symposium also included over 40 poster presentation by researcher and students and that were selected for best prize by eminent juries.
The valedictory function was presided over by Prof. V. K. Bhat, Registrar & Dean of Sciences and expressed extreme happiness and congratulated the organising team for successful completion of symposium. Prof. V. K. Bhat, stressed upon the extension of research in the field of biological sciences as the need of the present hour and insisted upon organising such Symposium/ Conferences for making people more aware about the different aspects of ongoing research in the field of Biotechnology. Prof. V. Verma, Head DoBT,& Dr. Sharda expressed happiness and congratulated convener and his team for their efforts.
